In just 3 short years, the Mark IV Chevy 427 big block cemented its status as the bad boy on the block in the muscle car world. Ranging from the 390 horsepower, low-compression L36 to the 560 horsepower, race-derived L88, the Chevy 427 proved to be a relentless powerhouse for a number of production Chevy vehicles between 1966 and 1969.

The L72 was a 427 cu in (7.0 L) 90° overhead valve V8 big-block engine produced by Chevrolet between 1966 and 1969. Initially rated at 450 horsepower, the rating dropped to 425 hp (317 kW) shortly after its release (although there was no change in power).

1967 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko SS L72 427 450HP (YS739) muscle classic


The 230ci six was a trusty economy engine for Chevrolet from its introduction. It was also used in the Chevelles and Chevy II/Nova from the early 1960s to 1970. The baseline Camaro 230ci was equipped with a Rochester 1BV single barrel carburetor that was rated near 250cfm.

The famous 1969 Yenko Camaros were COPO cars but used production-based Corvette 427 engines. Gibb's idea was to stuff the all-aluminum ZL1 427, which weighed over 100 pounds less than an iron big.

Under the cowl induction hood was a 427 engine rated at 425hp by GM or 450hp by Yenko. The L72 used a four-bolt-main cast-iron block, a forged crankshaft, solid-lifter camshaft, 11:1 compression, rectangle-port heads with 2.19 intake and 1.72 exhaust valves, an aluminum intake and a Holley carburetor.

29 April 2019 Share When Chevrolet refused to build the big-block 427 Camaro that people wanted, Don Yenko stepped up to answer the call. His speed shop in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, turned from race car support to production line in 1967 as new Camaros received heart transplants by the dozens.

Joe learned that Wade's Super Camaro was one of the 375-hp SS 396-to-blueprinted-427-conversions built at DHPC. It also received headers, a tach, gauges, and special paint, wheels, tires, and traction aids. A letter from DHPC mechanic James Zeleny, stating that the Camaro was built there, was included in the sale.

The all-alloy 427ci Camaro ZL-1 was the pinnacle of Chev performance in 1971 (and for years after!). It's a credit to Allan Moffat that he was able to take Bob Jane down to the wire for the '71 title despite Moff's Boss Mustang giving away a full two-litres' engine capacity to the Camaro.

Chevrolet offered the code ZL1 427-CI all-aluminum motor (only available for Corvette, and an engine which cost more than $4,000 alone to install). Aluminum cylinder heads reduced the 427 big-block's overall weight by 70 pounds compared to the iron head versions. Closed combustion chambers were used with the first generation of L88 heads, and chamber size poured out at 106.8cc. Intake valves measured 2.19-inches and exhausts were 1.72-inches.

The biggest engine available in mainline 1969 Camaros was Chevy's 375-bhp 396-cid V-8. Yenkos, however, were fitted with the Corvette 427. It was rated at 425 bhp, but Yenko pegged it at a more realistic 450. So at Yenko's urging, Chevy agreed to factory-build a batch of 1969 Camaros with 427 engines, and to provide full 5-year/50,000-mile.
