Motor, tranny, & rear end are supposed to be out of a 96 Explorer. Torque monster headers, 2.5 exhaust through borla mufflers out the rear.

They have different input shaft lengths and pilot bushing requirements. There's also alot of internal differences. GM also used the T-5.

I have a 99 Ford Ranger with a 3.0 and the 4x4 is inoperative. I have no power at the transfer
The entire 5.0 engine, transmission and AWD transfer case from the Explorer bolts directly into a 1998+ 4×4 Ranger using the Ranger mounting points and original driveshafts. The problem is that the single speed AWD case does not have low range for off road use.

5.0 V8 Swap: 14k Mile Ford Ranger. Jeff Lavery. There are a few important numbers to keep track of here: this is a 1991 Ford Ranger pickup with 14,000 original miles. When it was new, it received an engine swap, with a 5.0 V8 from a wrecked Mustang with 1,200 miles on it at the time of the accident, and a matching 5-speed manual.

Yes, you can use a Crown Vic, etc, but they would be 4.6 V8's (which won't fit in a Ranger easily) unless you go to an OBDI setup (pre-96). The Explorer was the only vehicle to come with the 5.0 after '95 - all the others went to 4.6's. I would recommend staying with the 5.0 and using an Explorer as a donor.

5.0 Engine Dimensions. Looks like the 5.0 is ~29 inches wide while the Mustang EB 2.3 is ~26 inches wide. Pretty sure the transmission will have to be changed as well since it appears the bellhousing pattern is different. Ford Racing sells the 5.0 plus the 10 speed auto as a swap-in kit, for Off Road Use only of course.

Equipped with a 5.4 liter V8 engine, the Ranger Lightning Bolt concept was far out, even for Ford, who never actually put it into production. Too bad Ranger production is about to end, otherwise we'd be calling for Ford to fit the new Coyote 5.0 under the hood.
