Biography Joel-Peter Witkin was one of triplets, but his sister died before birth, leaving only two boys. The dissimilar religious backgrounds of his parents--his father was Jewish and his mother a devout Catholic--led to their divorce when Witkin and his brother were still very young.

Joel-Peter Witkin (1939) American Biography Joel-Peter Witkin was born in Brooklyn in 1939. Drafted in 1961, he was a combat photographer in Vietnam until 1964. In 1967, he became the official photographer for City Walls Inc. He received a bachelor's degree in sculpture from Cooper Union in 1974.
