The Ahrens AR404 LAAHS


The AR-404 was designed as a rugged utility aircraft, capable of carrying 30 pax or three LD3 cargo containers. It was intended to be series produced at Aguadilla in Puerto Rico, and this example was in fact the first one built there. It first flew in 1979, three years after the first flight of the prototype N404AR (which was built and flown at Oxnard, CA). Two more airframes were completed in.

The Ahrens AR 404 was a prototype American civil transport aircraft first flown in 1976, a high-wing monoplane powered by four turboprop engines. In order to facilitate the loading and unloading of cargo, the fuselage was of constant rectangular section along almost its entire length, the main undercarriage was retracted into sponsons on the fuselage sides, and the tail included a loading ramp.

Ahrens was supposed to build this 4 engine turboprop utility aircraft at Borinquen Airport, but problems with the goverment and funding halted the project back in the early 1980s. Only two aircraft flew (N404AR and N1028G), and two more were built (N1028K and N1028N), as well as a fifth nose section. One complete aircraft (this one) and two.
