I've been getting the 'drive modes unavailable' message every time I have drove the car a bit of a distance, shut it down (for petrol etc) then start it again. Finally had enough today when it happened, stormed into the garage for the trusty WD40 and gave the exhaust valve a few squirts. Problem solved.
