Jul 4, 2008. #1. hey guys i get diesel power magazine, and this month they had a 98 ranger with a 4btcummins swapped in. the truck was lifted and was packing a dodge fullsize tranny and a ford 9inch rearend. i currently have a 99 with a 3.0 but i dont wanna use this for a swap. im thinking of getting a 95-97 extended cab.

4 posts · Joined 2023. #4 · Oct 20, 2023. The truck is a 2004 Ford Ranger with the 4.0l engine. I was doing some research and an f150 transmission may have to be used. The transmission in the truck is the stock automatic, but since I have to swap it out anyways I was going to put in a manual.

This is certainly the case with a V6 Ford Ranger. The stock 207 hp and 238 lb-ft of torque run a little short to propel the 3,606 lbs around in any sort of a hurry, not to mention the measly 15 mpg from the 4.0L V6 is quite underwhelming. These factors drove Balmer to undertake the swap. Plus, who doesn't want a Cummins swapped Ranger?

Rangers are popular swap material for the 4bt and there is a lot to read. If you drive sanely and don't plan on huge HP increases, the Ford/Mazda M5R2-OD is a good transmission. Reasonably light weight and has excellent gear ratios for the 4bt. If you plan to beat it up a lot then the Ford ZF-S542 would be better.

Hope you got some deep pockets filled with cash. engine trans and adapter plate are $3500 new transmission. axles and t case $700. rebuild on the front. engine is easy to wire; alternator wire, fuel solenoid wire, and starter wires. the rest is what ever gauges and grounds want/needed.

A 4bt in a ranger has been done and and documented numerous times, a quick search of the forum will get you enough reading material to keep you busy for a while. Also YouTube has a number of ranger swap vids. There is a guy on the 4bt Facebook page with a 12v in a sas ranger and on YouTube there's a guy with a 3-53 Detroit in one.
