It really depends on how you use them. The 109 is solid in almost everything it does, while the 190 is much more focused on BnZ. Both are pretty good but I'll say use the F4 if you're less experienced. 109s are far more forgiving than the Focke Wulfs and will be more fun if you're just starting out.

I like the BF 109 E4 in this bracket, its one of the most maneuverable 109´s you can get + you get a quite high amount of 7.92mm ammo (1000 rpg on "E" Model instead of 500 rpg on "F" Model), beside the same amount of 20mm as on the FW 190 A1. This is kinda hard to compare. As they're different lines of fighters with their own characteristics.

As for which was "better", it's a hard question to answer. The Fw 190 obviously is a more modern, and in many was more refined, design, and is a good example of the direction that many fighter designs were going at the time: Towards heavier aircraft able to take more powerful engines and carry heavier armament in exchange for higher wingloading, reduced overall maneuverability and often worse.

Fw 190 and Bf 109 - the Me/Bf 209, by herb. Here's what i have on the 209. Messerschmitt Bf 209 V1 was built as a speed record plane in the mid 30's. V2 and V3 were variations on the speed plane. Then Bf 209 V4 was an attempt to make the speed plane into a warbird. apparently there were some problems with the design and it was mostly scrapped.

It's about preferred play style: BF109 (early) excellent energy fighter and decent BnZ. Solid turn fighter, though Jap/Brits better. Armament mediocre (E4 the exception) FW190 (all models) excellent BnZ, good energy fighter but never get in a turn fight. Armament very, very good.

Gaijin I feel really neutered the 190s, the same way they ruined a lot of US props. The Bf109 is like the P51 or spitfire, more agile and turns faster with weaker armament. Fw190 is like the P47 or tempest, faster and better armaments but worst overall turn rate, but the Fw190 does have a good roll rate.

The 190 can make quick adjustments in combat but cannot hold well in any manouvering fight. Example: Bf-109 E-4 vs. 190 A-1. 2x 7.92, 2x 20mm vs. 4x 7.92, 2x 20mm. The 109 can pull lead easier than the 190, but can't adjust to sudden rolls as easily. The 190 will easily adjust to a rolling opponent, but the elevator is fairly weak making it.

BF-109 K-4, FW-190 A-8, or FW-190 D-9. 109 K-4 is the most versatile in terms of general flight characteristics and dogfighting, it's also more unstable in the air generally and requires more skill to fully control. So at a glance it seems to me like the 190 is a somewhat better fighter, the starting 190 vs the same 3.7 109 equivalent appears to be strictly better in every aspect (especially weapons with 2x the amount of guns and cannons the 109 has), and aside from aesthetic appeal and the tech tree (getting 262s later on), I'm wondering if there's any real real to use the 109 over the 190
