The 903/3 prototype was built for the sole purpose of winning the Targa Florio and Nürburgring legs of the world Championship. The 908 specialized in lightweight design through the use of a 48 lbs titanium space frame and 26 lbs body. Known as the Porche miracle by Italians, the 908/3s won the Targa Florio and Nürburgring outright in 1970.

The 908/03 is, without a doubt, a special car. Designed by Porsche especially for use on just two tracks in the World Sportscar Championship in 1970 and 1971 - the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring Nordschleife - its lightweight construction was radical, but boasted almost perfect weight distribution.

Top speed: 275 km/h (171 mph) Tipping the scales at just 545 kilograms, the Spyder took lightweight construction to the extreme. The foam-reinforced plastic body was an incredibly light twelve kilograms. The driver and engine were positioned further forward, to improve the weight distribution.

Porsche 908/03. Easily the most successful of all 908/3s built, chassis 008 was driven to each of the type's three major victories in 1970 and 1971. In its debut season and wearing Gulf colours, Jo Siffert and Brian Redman used it to win the Targa Florio. Later in the month it was entered by the Porsche Salzburg squad for Vic Elford and Kurt.

The bore was enlarged to 84 mm and fitted to the 907's six-speed transaxle. However, from 1969, a new five-speed gearbox was used. The 908/3 engine produced 350 horsepower which was low when compared with the other manufacturer's engines. The reason the 908 was competitive was that it was light and its power-to-weight ratio was better than most.

Porsche built an entirely new car, the 908/3, based largely on the 909 Bergspyder hillclimb car that had been built for 1968 using the lightest possible components. The ultra lightweight 908/3 was intended for winding courses such as the Nürburgring and the Targa Florio while the 917 would be used at power circuits such as Monza.

In its debut year of 1970, the Porsche 908/3 scored victories in the two races it was designed for; the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring 1000 km races. Unfortunately these fine results were left in the dust, behind the racing headlines that Porsche finally won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

The little 908/3 was almost unbeatable on the twisty tracks of the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring Nordschleife, helping Porsche to win the International Championship of Makes in 1970 and 1971. The story of the 908/3 began when the legendary 5-litre Porsche 917k replaced the 908 coupé.

The Porsche 908/3 was the car created by Porsche specifically to race and win in just 2 races, the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring 1000. The insane Porsche 917 was considered too heavy and tail happy to race on the tighter, more twisty circuits and so Porsche revived the 908 and set about creating a car capable of taking on all comers at the.

Porsche primarily developed the 908/03 with two particular races in mind: the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring 1000 KM (due to their peculiar twisty natures). Stunning victories at the Nürburgring 1000 KM (1st and 2nd overall) as well as the Targa Florio (also 1st and 2nd overall) left no doubt about the superior handling abilities of the 908/03.

The new 3-litre Type 908 flat-eight produced 350 PS (257 kW) at 8,400 rpm. Being traditionally air-cooled and with only two valves per cylinder, it still had less power compared to more modern F1 designs which delivered over 400 hp (300 kW), but were not suited to endurance racing.
