When changing the fluid, (car is cold) fill it up to the bottom of the dipstick and drive it around the block a few times. Take a reading and add as necessary. As other posters have said, overfilling is not good. I don't think a quarter inch overfull will hurt, but between the lines is best. Reactions:Mooseman.

I recently did a transmission fluid change on my 2014 MDX. I added 4 quarts, which is a bit more than the recommended 3.6. Drove around, took a measurement, and it was reading WAY high. I stuck a suction pump down the dipstick hole and probably pulled out 2 quarts.

Going by the almighty owners manual for my car, it takes 3.8 quarts on an oil change (with filter). I put in 4, run it, let it sit over night. In the morning I can pull the dipstick and on the side with the marks it will read full. Flip it over to the side sans marks and the oil level will be around the add mark.
