The Type 3 diversified Volkswagen's product range beyond the existing models - the VW Beetle (also called VW Bug), Type 14 Karmann Ghia and the VW Bus - while retaining several of the Beetle's key engineering principles, notably the air-cooled rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and all-round torsion bar suspension on the same 2,400 mm (94.5 in) wheelbase.

In 1961, the Karmann Ghia briefly lost its title of fastest Volkswagen, upon launch of the more powerful 1500cc Type 3 models, but later that year, Volkswagen, Ghia, and Karmann presented an all new Karmann Ghia - Type 34, using the Type 3's floorpan and 1500cc powertrain.

1961 saw the introduction of the Type 34 Karmann Ghia (below), a larger car styled by Sergio Sartorelli and based on the Type 3 VW chassis. It offered more modern suspension and luxury extras such as an electric sunroof and plusher interior trim.

The Karmann Ghia was launched in 1955 as a 2+2 coupe using the 1192cc, 34bhp Beetle engine and in September 1957 the stylish convertible was added to the range.. In 1971 the chunky rear lamps from the Type 3 were fitted, while inside the dashboard and door caps were covered in stippled black plastic and the instrument cluster was redesigned.

The Type 34 was built on the Volkswagen Type 3 chassis and shared the same 1500cc engine as the Fastback (The 14 was also fitted with a 1500cc engine in 1967). Seventeen cabriolet prototype 34's were also built. In 1970 Karmann Ghia do Brazil manufactured a new Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC, also called the Type 145.

It was based on the Type 3 platform rather than that of the Beetle, with the aim of offering a sportier, more luxurious coupe. VW only built 16 cabriolets based on the Type 34, which are now prized collector items. The sharper looks of the Type 34 were matched by a 45bhp 1,500cc engine, then a 54bhp 1,600cc unit from 1966.

The VW Type 34 was launched in 1961 and was also styled by Ghia, however it sat on a Type 3 floor pan. Only 42,505 of these 'Razor Edge Ghia' models were made before production stopped in 1969. The VW Type 145 was a Brazilain made Karmann Ghia TC and also penned by Ghia. It was exclusively sold in South America between 1972 and 1975.

These include the "large" Type 34 1500 Karmann Ghia. Volkswagen presented this model at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1961 with a stylish body designed by Ghia of Turin. The "four-eyed" front end gave the coupé a distinctive appearance and the rear end is reminiscent of contemporary American models.

The razor Ghia--then billed by VW as the most elegant and luxurious automobile it produced--enjoyed the mechanical updates that the rest of the Type 3 family had in 1967, including front disc brakes and a displacement and carburetion bump to 1,584 cc (96.66-cu.in.) and twin downdraft Solexes.

Based on the new Type 3 platform, the Type 34 was known as Der Große Karmann, meaning 'the big Karmann' in German. Also styled by Ghia, the Type 34 was noticeably different from the Type 14, with its sharp and distinct edges. Intended to be a higher end car, the Type 34 offered a greater level of standard equipment over the Type 14.
