The Ford 351 Cleveland engine was introduced in 1970 as a response to the Chevrolet 350 V8 engine . Named for the Ohio city where it was produced, the 351 Cleveland was expected to be Ford's most innovative small-block engine. Similar to the Ford 351 Windsor V8 , the Cleveland had smaller connecting rods to allow for a more rapid acceleration.

The 351C, introduced in 1969 for the 1970 model year, is commonly referred to as the 351 Cleveland after the Brook Park, Ohio, Cleveland Engine plant in which most of these engines were manufactured. This plant complex included a gray iron foundry (Cleveland Casting Plant), and two engine assembly plants (Engine plant 1 & 2).

In my experience, the best streetperformance cams are ground with a lobe separation between 108 and 114 degrees. Keeping lobe separation above 112 degrees improves drivability because the engine idles smoother and makes better low-end torque. There's also more vacuum at idle for accessories and power brakes.

The crowning glory of any 351 Cleveland was obviously the big-port, canted-valve cylinder heads. Heads for the 351C test motor also came from our 1971 4V core motor. Originally a standard 4V 351C, these 1971 heads featured the desirable (smaller) quench chambers, but missing was the adjustable valve train offered on the solid-cammed (hard to find) Boss 351 heads.
